Designer dog breeds
"The latest trend in doggy world"
Designer dog breeds, a term coming into existence in the late 20th century, is described as a cross between two purebred dogs. The breeder's thought process is that by combining two purebred dogs it's possible to combine desirable characteristics from both dogs into one single breed.
Unfortunately it doesn't always turn out that way, results can be very different than expected. Instead of getting those desired traits you may end up with the undesirable traits or you may get a combination of those desirable traits and the undesirable ones.
Generally speaking, more predictable results will occur over time. After several generations of cross-breading the same dogs you can achieve a more consistent size, appearance and temperament.
For more info on these dogs and some really cool pics, check out my friend's article on history of designer dogs.
Are Designer dog breeds healthier than Purebreds
The breeders of these "Hybrid dogs" claim them to be healthy and have fewer medical issues than purebred dogs. They believe that thousands of years of breeding specific small dog breeds have created many medical issues in purebreds that do not exist in the mixed breed or hybrid dog breeds.
What people are saying ...
The Designer dog has become a highly controversial subject with many differences of opinion. Breeders of these designer dog breeds are being criticized for being more interested in producing these dogs for profit and not caring enough about the potential dog health problems associated with these dogs.
With the appearance of more and more hybrid dog breeds and the their tremendous popularity, many back yard breeders and "puppy mills" have gotten into the act and are flooding the market with just about any dog combination you may ever want.
Many shelters and rescue groups warn that this "Designer Dog " is just a fad, once it wears off and begins to get old, most of these dogs will end up back in the pet shelters and small dog rescue groups, adding further to the already out of control dog overpopulation.
On the other side of the coin, Breeders and fanciers of the Designer dog breeds point out that all of today's modern purebred dogs were, in their beginning, bred from selectively combining various purebred dogs in the same way as the "Hybrid dogs" are created.
Designer Dog Breeds
Not considered a "purebred" dog
Be aware that although these dogs are bred from purebred stock, they are not considered to be purebred dogs so you will not be able to register them as such and you can't enter them in purebred dog shows. If you simply want a healthy, cute, lovable companion dog and can afford it than by all means, go for it.
How Big is your pocketbook?
If you are considering buying one of these ever popular, trendy little dogs, be prepared to open your pocket book nice and wide.
Because they are so popular and in such high demand, breeders are getting a big premium for these dogs. Some dogs can cost you up to $2000.00 or more. In addition, you may not be able to find a breeder locally and will have to travel far and wide to find what your looking for.
Have you done your homework?
As in purchasing a purebred dog (or any other dog for that matter ), do your homework first. Make sure your dog is healthy, check out his background, visit the breeders site and make sure you're not dealing with a "puppy mill" or incompetent breeder. If possible ask to see both the dogs parents and find out what sort of guarantees they provide and what their return policy is.
